Battle of the Sexes
It’s 1973, the world is in the wake of the sexual revolution and the women’s movement is on the rise. The tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King and ex-men’s champion and serial hustler Bobby Riggs was billed as the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers across the world. But both players were battling their own demons off court – King was coming to terms with her own sexuality while Riggs’ gambling addiction was affecting his marriage. Together they created a cultural spectacle that resonated much further than the tennis court, sparking conversations that still continue to reverberate in today’s world.
